The "2-hour rule": study 2 hrs per credit hr per week

The 2-Hour Study Rule

Research by the National Survey of Student Engagement recommends 2–3 hours of study per credit hour per week. For a 15-credit semester, that is 30–45 hours of study per week beyond class time.

Is 2 hours per credit really necessary?

It depends on your prior knowledge and course difficulty. First-year students often need more; advanced students in familiar topics may need less. Use the multiplier to personalise.

How should I split study time across subjects?

Allocate proportionally to credit hours — a 4-credit course deserves more time than a 2-credit elective. Also weight toward harder subjects.
