How do different country GPAs compare to the US 4.0 scale?

What is the ECTS credit system used in Europe?
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) standardises credit across European universities. One ECTS credit represents approximately 25–30 hours of student workload. A full year of study equals 60 ECTS credits. This allows students to transfer between European institutions without losing academic progress.
Does Germany really grade in reverse?
Yes — in the German system, 1.0 is the highest grade (Sehr gut / Very Good) and 4.0 is the minimum pass. A grade of 5.0 means fail. This is the opposite of the US 4.0 scale, which is why this tool converts German grades before displaying the US GPA equivalent.
What is the Danish 7-step scale?
Denmark uses an unusual 7-step scale with grades 12, 10, 7, 4, 02, 00, and -3. The steps were designed so that 00 and -3 clearly communicate failure, while the gaps between passing grades reflect meaningful academic differences. Grade 02 is the minimum pass — equivalent to a very basic understanding of the material.
How does India's 10-point CGPA convert to percentage?
The CBSE (and most UGC-affiliated universities) use the formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So a CGPA of 8.0 equals approximately 76%, and a CGPA of 9.5 equals approximately 90.25%. Individual universities may use slightly different multipliers — check your institution's official handbook.
