Score Scenarios

How the calculation works

The required exam score is derived from the weighted-average formula. Given your current grade C, target grade T, and exam weight W (as a decimal):

Required Score = (T − C × (1 − W)) ÷ W

Example: Current grade 78%, target 80%, final worth 30%.
Required = (80 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (80 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30 = 84.7%

What if the required score is above 100%?

If the calculator shows a score above 100%, it's mathematically impossible to reach your target with that final exam weight. Consider adjusting your target grade or speaking with your instructor about extra credit options.

What if the required score is 0% or negative?

Great news — you've already secured your target grade regardless of your final exam score. You can take the exam stress-free, though performing well can still boost your grade above the target.

My exam is worth a letter grade, not a percentage — what do I enter?

Convert your letter grade to a percentage using your institution's scale (e.g., B = 83%) and enter that. Many universities publish their grade-to-percentage equivalents in the course syllabus.
