UK Grading System: Degree Classifications Explained
How UK First/2:1/2:2/Third degree classifications are calculated, what the percentage bands mean, and how they convert to a US GPA.
UK degree classification system
UK universities award undergraduate degrees in classifications rather than a numeric GPA. The classification is determined by your overall percentage mark, which is itself a weighted average of module marks across one or more years (typically the final two years carry most weight).
| Classification | Percentage Band | US GPA Equivalent | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-Class Honours (1st) | ≥ 70% | ≈ 3.7–4.0 | Highest classification |
| Upper Second Class (2:1) | 60–69% | ≈ 3.0–3.7 | Standard 'good degree' |
| Lower Second Class (2:2) | 50–59% | ≈ 2.0–3.0 | Satisfactory |
| Third-Class Honours (3rd) | 40–49% | ≈ 1.0–2.0 | Minimum honours pass |
| Ordinary / Pass | 35–39% | < 1.0 | Non-honours pass |
| Fail | < 35% | 0 | Fail |
How the classification is calculated
Most universities weight the final year at 60–80% of the overall mark, with the penultimate year making up the remainder. Some institutions use a 'borderline' rule where a candidate within 2% of the next classification boundary may be promoted if a majority of their modules fall in the higher band.
Postgraduate (Master's) grades
UK Master's programmes typically award: Distinction (70%+), Merit (60–69%), Pass (50–59%), and Fail (below 50%). These are separate from the undergraduate classification system.

Frequently asked questions
What is a First-Class Honours degree in GPA terms?
A First (70%+) is broadly equivalent to a 3.7–4.0 on the US 4.0 scale, though exact conversions vary by evaluator. WES (World Education Services) and NARIC typically map a First to 3.7+ GPA. The GPA Converter gives the conversion your evaluator is most likely to apply.
Is a 2:1 a good degree?
Yes. A 2:1 (Upper Second Class, 60–69%) is the standard 'good degree' benchmark in UK graduate recruitment and postgraduate admissions. Most UK employer graduate schemes require a 2:1 as a minimum. It maps to roughly 3.0–3.7 GPA on the US scale.
Do Scottish universities use the same classification system?
Scotland uses a similar system but with different grade bands: Distinction (70%+), Merit (60–69%), Pass (50–59%), and a separate honours classification for integrated master's-level programmes. Older Scottish degree traditions may refer to distinctions differently — always check the issuing university.
How are UK percentages different from US percentages?
In the UK, 70% is an excellent mark (a First); 80–90% is exceptional and rare. In the US, 90%+ is an A and 70% is a C. Never compare raw percentages across systems — always convert to the destination country's grade classification.
